File Sharing Between Mac and PC
Now a days most of the small businesses or home offices would have more than one computer and also connecting to internet via Local Area Network (LAN). There are also more and more users start using the Mac computer the very first time and consequently requires to transfer some data from a PC (Windows) based computer to a Mac computer.
Here is the step by step procedures of how to link between a PC and a Mac so that you can transfer file between the computers. It is assumed that both computers are connected to the same Local Area Network via a Router.
1. Find out the IP address of both the Mac and the PC first.
For Mac – go to System Preferences/Network/Buit-in Ethernet or Airport
For PC – Command prompt (Window key then type in cmd) , when you et the prompt, then type in ipconfig
2. Enable File sharing on Mac
System Preferences/sharing- tick the box for “File Sharing”
Then Click on “Options”, then tick the box for “Share Files and folders using SMB (Windows)”.
3. To connect the Mac on the PC
Open “My Computer” then type in \\IP address of Mac (from step1). It should look like these \\192.168.1.6 or
\\10.0.0.6
You should get a new window and type in User name and password of Mac
If you type in the user name and password of the administrator of the Mac computer, you should be able to access
all the folders on the Mac.
4. To connect the PC on the Mac
Make sure you are in the “Finder”, then go to Go/Connect to server, then in “server address”, type in
smb://IP address of PC (from step1), then click “Connect”
Type in User Name and password of PC
